Elsy Garbes has emerged as one of the prominent referees in the decentralized Copa ESSA tournament in Barrancabermeja. In an emotional testimony, Garbes describes her career from her beginnings as a scorer 15 years ago to becoming a national and professional referee in 2010. She has officiated matches at the national level in various regions of the country, facing greater challenges when officiating men’s matches.

“The most difficult games to referee are the men’s,” says Garbes, who has refereed in Antioquia, Tolima and Montería. Despite the challenges, he highlights the respect and collaboration he receives from the male players he referees.

With more than 30 games officiated and more than 15 years on the referees’ commission, Garbes invites more women to join this group. “It is a very good discipline where you gain experience, humility and face challenges that strengthen you,” says Garbes, challenging the perception that refereeing is exclusively for men.

Garbes hopes to continue his career as a referee, exercising his work with authority and passion in each match he officiates.
