The agreement to unblock Plaza de España, which began to be forged at the end of the last term, is beginning to bear fruit and one of the first consequences of this is the drastic reduction of municipal debt, which has registered a fall of more than 54%, going from almost 84 million euros at its peak to 38 in 2023, as confirmed by the data made public by the Ministry of Finance. In this way, the City Council is below the legal limit allowed in terms of the level of indebtedness, set at 110%. “This means that we will have a greater capacity to make investments that will improve both public facilities and the neighbourhoods of San Fernando de Henares,” said the mayor, Javier Corpa.

The mayor insisted that this is “very positive data that I want to share with my neighbours, and that shows that we are taking firm steps to resolve one of the major problems facing our municipality.”

CHRONOLOGY
The resolution of the complex process of Plaza de España began in the last term, being one of the management priorities. It was in July 2019 when lighting was provided to this emblematic space, which had remained in the dark for years; activity was then resumed and this enclave was consolidated as a meeting point for important events. The vast majority of compensation has also been paid to the affected residents and, in parallel, a period of negotiation began in order to reach an agreement, which was reached with the Ministry of Finance, the bankruptcy administration and the CaixaBank entity; and which had the authorization of the Commercial Court No. 6 of Madrid. Thus, all the assets (homes, commercial premises and parking spaces) that had remained ‘trapped’ for more than a decade in bankruptcy, passed ‘into the hands’ of the City Council. Then comes this drastic reduction in municipal debt, which will be reduced by another six million euros in 2024, and without ceasing investment during this year.

The Government team is now continuing to work on the legal and administrative regularisation of these assets in order to put them into operation as soon as possible.
