Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jul 5 (EFE).- The president of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila (CC), has asked this Friday for “respect and freedom” following the complaint by the mayor of Icod de los Vinos, Javier Sierra (Alternativa Icodense), that he has suffered homophobic insults on social networks and in the form of graffiti in the municipality.

Dávila has expressed her full support for the municipal mayor and has said that “those who attack with these homophobic insults do not represent the people of Tenerife or Icod de los Vinos”, for which reason she has asked for “respect and freedom above all else”, the island president stressed in a publication through X (formerly Twitter).

Sierra also thanked the neighbours, fellow members of the corporation, political parties, groups and media outlets that have given him their support over the last few days: “I am overwhelmed to feel that in contrast to the four who yearn for darkness, there is a society that embraces colours,” he said.

It is accompanied by a cartoon, ‘the Millenary Dragon Tree’, by the graphic cartoonist of the newspaper El Día Padylla. It portrays the mayor watering the Icod Dragon Tree with the colours of the LGTBI flag and a message: “However much they want, this dragon tree has such strong roots and is so resistant that it is impossible to uproot it.” EFE
