Astana has made a surprising announcement of a new main sponsorship from next season, with the Chinese manufacturer XDS Carbon-Tech, a manufacturer of carbon fibre and also of its own frames made of this material, which will presumably become the new bikes for the Kazakh team.

XDS Carbon-Tech is one of the largest producers of carbon fibre in the world, as well as producing its own carbon fibre bike frames. Now, they want to open up to the world and make themselves known by entering the World Tour directly with a multi-million euro investment in sponsoring the Astana team, a team that in recent years has been plagued by news of late payments to its riders and all kinds of financial problems.

The choice of a flagship team such as Astana, sponsored by the Kazakh government and companies from this country, is curious. However, XDS Carbon-Tech’s intention would be for the team to have a Chinese license, something that will be difficult to say no to since we are talking about an investment on the level of UAE Team Emirates or Visma-Lease a Bike.

Since XDS Carbon-Tech is also a bike frame manufacturer, it is likely that the sponsorship agreement will also include the supply of bicycles, having to abandon its current agreement with Wilier.

During the Tour de France, there have been several meetings between Alexander Vinokourov, CEO of Astana, and representatives of XDS Carbon-Tech and rumours suggest that the sponsorship agreement could be officially announced even before the end of the 2024 Tour de France.

A sponsorship that comes as a breath of fresh air for Astana in a season in which the team has fallen into total irrelevance and is in the relegation zone in the World Tour team rankings in the second year of the current licensing cycle, so next year it will be time to look at the rankings again when deciding which teams will make up the World Tour category from 2016 to 2018.
