No fatalities were reported, although there were injuries, including firefighters and members of a news crew that recorded the incident.

A tanker truck carrying fuel caught fire on a highway in Brazil on Wednesday and exploded in spectacular fashion shortly after midday. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, although several people were burned.

The incident occurred on the BR 010 highway, also known as the Belém-Brasilia highway, between the municipalities of Paragominas and Ulianópolis, in the state of Pará.

According to local media, the explosion left at least six people injured. Among them are three members of the SBT Paragominas team: presenter and reporter Alan Nelis, cameraman Wellington Moura, and technician Márcio Lopes, who suffered second-degree burns.

Two firefighters who were working on the emergency and a person who was filming the fire were also injured. All the affected people were taken to an Emergency Unit in the area and are out of danger.

Journalist Alan Nelis, 27, shared his experience after the incident: “Everything happened very quickly. People took refuge behind cars. The cameraman and the technician managed to run towards a patch of vegetation, but I couldn’t because I have an operation on my foot,” he told the UOL website in Brazil.

Nelis, who suffered burns on his neck and arm, explained that the team was at least 200 metres away from the scene at the time of the explosion. “It was a safe distance and we never imagined that something like this could happen. The burns were not caused by the fire, but by the gas vapour, which was very strong,” he added.

The cause of the fire in the tanker truck is still unknown and is under investigation. The driver of the vehicle, seeing that the fire was getting out of control, left the truck stopped on the shoulder, which caused a traffic jam of more than 3 kilometers.

Several witnesses captured the dramatic scene, and videos of the loud explosion that caused panic among those present quickly went viral on social media.
