The Sun spoke to royal expert Hugo Vickers about recent events that have shaken the British Royal Family. He noted that, in the past 50 years, the death of Lady Di in 1997 represented one of the biggest crises. However, he raised the possibility that Meghan Markle’s arrival and her subsequent departure with Prince Harry for California could be seen in the long term as an even bigger flashpoint.

Meghan and Harry’s exit was a royal scandal

The royal expert highlighted that, despite the initial popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after their wedding, Tensions within the royal family increased markedly during the last years of the Queen’s life. The crisis intensified with the decision taken during a summit at Sandringham in January 2020, where Queen Elizabeth II established that the Sussexes could leave their royal duties but without maintaining the associated privileges. Although the Queen expressed her gratitude for Meghan’s work, the couple were clear in their decision not to return to their royal duties a year later, following a review.

The royal scandal that Elizabeth II could not forgive

This resulted in the removal of patronages and honorary titles for Meghan and Harry, who continued to defend their commitment to public service, even if outside of official roles. The situation culminated in a “tell-all interview” by Harry and Meghan with Oprah Winfrey, broadcast shortly after final negotiations with the royal family. This interview created a global stir and marked a significant turning point in the public perception of the British royal family and its former members.

An interview that was a big surprise

Surprisingly, the Queen was not informed of what was planned, since, as sources inside the palace revealed, “as members of the Royal Family who do not work, they are not obliged to inform the Royal Household of such plans.”

Queen Elizabeth II never forgave betrayal

Faced with the avalanche of accusations, many of which turned out to be false, The Queen waited more than 38 hours to respond publicly. She ordered a private family-led investigation into the allegations, but, more tellingly, she uttered these words: “Some recollections may vary.” However, this proved to be unforgivable for the monarch, who placed the blame entirely on the protagonist of Suits.
