The Guatemalan community residing in Zaragoza has been participating in the Flower Offering to the Virgin of Pilar for 15 years and this year Guatemala will have the honour of being the guest country at the Fiestas del Pilar in 2024. This recognition, which seeks to strengthen cultural and coexistence ties with the Central American country, has been received with “great joy” and “emotion” by the nearly 300 Guatemalans residing in the Aragonese capital, according to the country’s consulate in the city. “We are a small but very active community”, which has been participating in the Offering for 15 years, said the honorary consul, Manuel Zalba, who added that they had been waiting for years to be the guest country, so “we have received the news with great joy”. For her part, the municipal councillor for Culture of the City Council, Sara Fernández, has expressed her satisfaction at being able to share the celebration of the “queen of Hispanicity” with a sister country like Guatemala. “More than 300 Guatemalans live in our city, and with them and with the consular corps we are working on the different ways of participating in the festivities. The high point will be the offering, when a representation of Guatemala, together with the municipal Corporation, will be able to carry the floral flag of their country and place it on the mantle of our Virgin,” said Fernandez. The municipal councilor added: “We hope to be able to share with them their art, their culture, their traditions and their folklore this October.” FLOWER OFFERING Thus, the Guatemalan community will participate in the Flower Offering dressed in folkloric costumes known as “chapines” and accompanied by the Marimba orchestra, a percussion instrument typical of the traditional music of the Latin country. The City Council is already working with the consulate and the Guatemalan working group to define the community’s participation during the upcoming festivities, while also seeking new ways to bring the tradition and folklore of the Latin American country closer to Zaragoza residents and visitors. This initiative was launched in 2012 with Ecuador, followed over the years by the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Costa Rica, Bolivia, El Salvador and, exceptionally, Ukraine. Therefore, the mantle of the Virgin of Pilar on October 12, woven with tons of flowers, will this year display the floral flag of Guatemala.
