With the festival called ‘Gira del Amor’, the Ayangue commune, in the province of Santa Elena, began this Saturday, July 6, the season for sighting humpback whales.

Wilson Guale, in charge of the checkpoint, explained that each boat provides security and has a guide. The tour includes a visit to the El Pelado islet where sea lions, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, frigates, and other species can be observed.

Each tour departs as long as there is a minimum group of seven people.

During this day, the Santa Elena Mayor’s Office, together with the Tourism Department, has planned a festival in which the best dish presented by the cabins that operate in this tourist area will be chosen. There will also be a business fair.

Last June, the Ecuadorian government announced that it was preparing for the humpback whale watching season, which will take place on its coasts between June and October.

The unparalleled spectacle takes place in the provinces of Esmeraldas, El Oro, Manabí and Santa Elena, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Humpback whales arrive in Ecuador in large numbers from June onwards and remain mating in these warmer waters until September each year. There are jumps and dances as part of the rituals.
