Hamas meets with factions of other Palestinian organizations to discuss a ceasefire

Hamas leaders met last night with leaders of other Palestinian organisations to discuss the ceasefire proposal put forward by the group to Israel, which will be negotiated next week in Doha.

“As part of the joint national work and continuous communication in the face of Zionist aggression and the heroic steadfastness of our people, a delegation of Hamas leaders met with Secretary General of Islamic Jihad Ziyad Nakhala and Deputy Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Jamil Mezher,” Hamas said in a statement on its official channels. The militia did not specify where the meeting took place or which leaders of the organization participated.

“They reviewed the detailed ideas exchanged with the mediators and emphasized that the objectives of the resistance are to stop the aggression against our people, withdraw the occupation forces, provide relief to our people and reconstruction, as well as a fair prisoner exchange agreement,” the statement said.

Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniya presented mediators with a new deal proposal on Wednesday night, and Mossad chief David Barnea, who leads the Israeli negotiating team, made a whirlwind trip yesterday to receive the proposal and meet with Qatar’s prime minister, the lead mediator. After the trip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed his negotiating team to return to Doha next week to resume negotiations for a truce agreement in the Strip, although he admitted that there were still “gaps” in the positions of both sides.

Hamas maintains that any agreement must lead to a definitive cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, while Netanyahu insists that the war will not end until Israel has completely destroyed the Islamists’ military and government capabilities and has achieved the return of all hostages, living and dead.
