One person has been arrested after a student was sexually assaulted on the UCLA campus early Friday morning.

Multiple sources close to the investigation tell the NBC News Investigative Unit that the person in custody is a bystander.

There was heightened security on the UCLA campus Friday night, with patrols outside dormitories.

Students were on edge after learning that a man entered a dormitory in the middle of the night and sexually assaulted a girl.

“A lot of thugs are upset at the university, they say they are here to protect us, but where is the protection?” said Chantal de la Cruz, who lives in the UCLA dorms.

De la Cruz has lived in the Saxon Suites dorms for a year. She woke up Friday morning to find that a fellow student had been sexually assaulted in the middle of the night.

“Other students are participating in our group forums, they know, what’s going on and, to stay safe, to take care of each other,” De la Cruz said.

According to a UCLA crime alert, a man entered the student’s dormitory around 2:40 a.m. and sexually assaulted her.

The victim described the man as white, about 30 years old, heavyset and with a curly beard. She said he was wearing all black and a hat.

“It’s horrible, it’s scary, what I just heard is that someone climbed through someone’s window and then whatever, but it’s terrible that that kind of thing can happen in a school,” said Sophie Waldie, who lives in the UCLA dorms.

Police said they don’t know how the man got in, but students tell me the dorms don’t have air conditioning, so most leave the windows open at night.

“If you walk around you will see that many students have closed their windows now,” De la Cruz said.

Campus police are asking students to be alert, lock doors and windows and report any suspicious activity.

Student Harry Gallo said so many people are nervous that he was even reported to the police this morning.

“I was walking by there near my bedroom, and I was looking out my bedroom window and just reflecting on something that was going on at home and they actually called the police because people thought I might be trying to burglarize my own bedroom,” Gallo said.

Some students are criticizing the university, saying they have not felt safe on campus for several months.

“Honestly, I’m really ashamed of the university because during the last quarter the whole police situation and the camp and now this,” De la Cruz said.

There are currently many international and high school students staying there for summer programs, and some said they were unaware of the raid and never received an alert.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact UCLA police.
