The shooting suspect later died after fleeing the home and engaging in a police car chase that ended with the suspect’s car crashing into a ditch, police said.

Police heard gunshots when they arrived at the Florence home at 2:50 a.m., Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery said. Officers found seven victims in the home, Mallery said during a news conference.

Four people were found dead, police said. Three others were taken to a Cincinnati hospital in critical condition. The police chief said they are expected to recover.

Officers pursued the suspect, identified by police as 21-year-old Chase Garvey, as he fled the scene, which ended when his vehicle left the road and crashed into a ditch. Garvey suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died at a hospital, police said, noting that the suspect acted alone and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Several people had gathered at the home for a 21st birthday party for the homeowner’s son, Mallery said. The homeowner, identified as Melissa Parrett, 44, was killed in the shooting, the sheriff said. Garvey apparently knew some of the people who were at the party but had not been invited, Mallery said.

The other people killed in the shooting were Shane Miller, 20; Hayden Rybicki, 20; and Delaney Eary, 19, police said.

Authorities were investigating a possible motive.

“I know what’s going on across the country, but this is the first time we’ve had a mass shooting in Florence,” Mallery said. “It’s very emotional. My emotions go out to the victims, their families, the officers who responded to the incident and everyone who was affected by this situation.”

A neighbor, Leah Moore, told The Associated Press that she heard what she thought were firecrackers around 2 a.m. She was later awakened again by police lights.

“I saw police tape, I saw a bunch of police officers, I saw all the kids in one of my neighbors’ yards across the street,” Moore, 23, said in a telephone interview.

Moore said he knew Parrett and his family well and described them as “great, amazing people.”

“She’s very wholesome, very welcoming and the best person I’ve ever met,” Moore said.

Florence is a city of about 36,000 people and is located 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
