In Trieste, the Pope claims the “scandal of a faith that caresses people’s lives and heals broken hearts”

The Pope celebrated the Eucharist this Sunday in the Italian city of Trieste, where he traveled today to participate in the last day of the 50th Catholic Social Week. During his homily, Francis noted that the prophets “often encountered a rebellious people and were rejected.” Something similar happened to Jesus in Nazareth.

“Listening to what his compatriots say, we see that they only focus on their earthly history, on their family background, and therefore they cannot explain how the son of Joseph the carpenter, that is, an ordinary person, so much wisdom and even the ability to perform miracles could emerge”the Pope explained.

“The scandal, therefore, is the humanity of Jesus,” he stressed. “The obstacle that prevents these people from recognizing the presence of God in Jesus It is the fact that he is humanis simply the son of Joseph the carpenter.”

Against a faith “closed in on itself”

Thus, the scandal is “a faith based on a human God, who lowers himself to humanity, who cares for her, who is moved by our woundswho takes upon himself our weariness, who breaks himself like bread for us.”

In this sense, the Pope stressed that “today we need precisely this: the scandal of faith.” That is, “not a religiosity that is closed in on itself, that looks up to heaven without worrying about what happens on earth and celebrates liturgies in the temple.” forgetting the dust that runs through our streets.”

“What we need,” he said, “It is the scandal of faith, a faith rooted in the God who became man and, therefore, a human faith, a faith of flesh, which enters into history, which caresses the lives of people, which heals broken hearts, which becomes the leaven of hope and the seed of a new world.”

It is, above all, “a faith that dispels the calculations of human selfishness, that denounces evil, that points the finger at injustice, that It disturbs the plots of those who, in the shadow of power, play with the skin of the weak.”

For this reason, the Pope has encouraged us not to forget that “God hides in the dark corners of life and our cities, His presence is revealed precisely in faces hollowed out by suffering and where degradation seems to triumph. The infinity of God is hidden in human misery, the Lord moves and makes himself a friendly presence precisely in the wounded flesh of the last, the forgotten and the discarded.”
