GUANAJUATO, Gto., (apro).- Emblematic and festive traditions from Brazil and Oaxaca are present in the design of the poster for the next edition of the International Cervantino Festival, a creation by Graphic Design student from the University of Guanajuato, Jazmín Bedolla García, who was chosen among 54 proposals that participated in this year’s call for entries.

Brazil is the guest country, while Oaxaca is the state chosen as the guest of honor for this year’s 52nd edition, which will take place from October 11 to 27. The poster was presented this Thursday in a building in the historic center of the state capital, equally emblematic because it is the house where the writer, teacher and philosopher Emma Godoy was born.

The illustration is an explosion of color that shapes figures corresponding to two cultural expressions: one is the Tiliches of Putla Villa de Guerrero, in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, whose clothing symbolizes or represents the working class with straw hats, masks and colorful but torn clothes, since they represent the years of exploitation and misery in which the landowners kept them.

These characters take to the streets of Putla during their local carnival, waving the scraps of their clothes in the wind. The other part of the poster corresponds to Bumba-Meu-Boi (Hit my ox) from the Maranhao region in Brazil, another traditional representation involving the life cycle, the mystical and religious universe, personified by a colorful ox.

This is the fourth year that the current administration has invited students to design the official image of the International Cervantino Festival. Although in previous editions the invitation was limited to students from the University of Guanajuato, on this occasion it was expanded and students from nine institutions in the state were able to participate.

Jazmín Bedolla, the author of the winning poster and a Graphic Design student at the University of Guanajuato, said that she sought to integrate both guests – Oaxaca and Brazil – and for them to be present and united, “representing the joy and festivity that is what the Festival is about; celebrating that energy, that joy of culture, of diversity, for me both Oaxaca and Brazil have all of this.”

Present at the event were the Director of Planning at Cervantino, Raquel Buck -representing the director Mariana Aymerich Ordóñez-; the rector of the University of Guanajuato Claudia Susana Gómez, and the director of the State Institute of Culture, Adriana Camarena.

The latter highlighted that this call to design the official poster has opened “a vein to showcase this talent from Guanajuato through the graphic identity of the festival,” and a way to involve young people in the FIC.

The official also took the opportunity to talk about the headquarters of the Cervantine Heritage – the house where Emma Godoy was born: “one part of the house houses it, as a source of vital information. Another part of the house will be a cultural center, there is already a pictorial exhibition installed, from the collection of the State Institute of Culture and where other activities will be held.”

It was reported that the selection committee voted unanimously in favor of Jazmín’s work. This committee was made up of: Mariana Amerych Ordoñez, Natalia Pollack Bianchi, director of the Museum of Modern Art; Adrián Segovia, coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Animation at the University of Communication; Diego Aguirre, deputy director of communication at the Center for Digital Culture, and Edgar Morales Ramírez, director of the Department of Design at the University of Guanajuato. The Cervantino program will be presented on July 16.
