Everything you can’t miss at the 10th ‘Paco de Lucía’ International Guitar Meeting

In 2024, it will be ten years since the death of the brilliant guitarist and a high-quality poster has been prepared for the event that bears his name. Thus, the mayor of Algeciras, Jose Ignacio Landaluceand the deputy mayor in charge of Culture, Pilar Painterhave recalled that next week the 10th International Guitar Meeting ‘Paco de Lucía’ begins, which with its performances and parallel activities fills the cultural programme.

Thus, on Monday, July 8, it starts in the María Cristina Park, at ten o’clock at night, with the performance of the artists from Algeciras Salvador and Pastora Andrades.

On Tuesday, July 9th, the “Baile Flamenco” masterclass The exhibition will be given by La Lupi at half past ten in the morning, and by Curro de María at ten in the morning at the José María Sánchez Verdú Municipal School of Music, Dance and Theatre. In addition, at noon at the José Luis Cano Documentary Centre, the exhibition ’10 años cantando a Paco’ by José Mera will be inaugurated, which can be visited until 15 July. Finally, at ten o’clock at night in the María Cristina Park, the flamenco dancer Manuela Carrasco will perform.

On Wednesday, July 10, the masterclasses of ‘Flamenco Dance’ taught by Claudia Sánchez and ‘Flamenco Guitar’ taught by Fran de Algeciras will continue, both at ten in the morning, at the Municipal School of Music, Dance and Theater ‘José María Sánchez Verdú’. Meanwhile, in the María Cristina Park, at ten at night, the guitarist Rafael Riqueni.

STYLIZED DANCE

On Thursday, July 11, the following will be held: ‘Stylized Dance’ masterclass given by Esther Cohen at ten in the morning and ‘Notions on Current Musical Production’ given by Tatiana Delalvz at eleven thirty in the morning, at the ‘José María Sánchez Verdú’ Municipal School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Meanwhile, in the María Cristina Park, at ten at night, the sextet composed of Antonio Sánchez, José del Tomate, David de Jacoba, Piraña and Farru will perform.

The masterclasses end on Friday, July 12, with ‘Flamenco Dance’ taught by Mercedes Alcala, ‘Flamenco Singing’ taught by Rocío Alcalá and ‘Flamenco Guitar’ taught by Antonio Peralta ‘El Kuko’, all three at ten in the morning, at the ‘José María Sánchez Verdú’ Municipal School of Music, Dance and Theatre. In addition, at the ‘José Luis Cano’ Documentary Centre, at seven in the evening, the book ‘Paco de Lucía, el primer flamenco ilustrado’ by Manuel Alonso Escacena will be presented. OTHER ACTIVITIES

Finally, the mayor wanted to invite the citizens and those who visit us to enjoy this festival “not only a series of high-level performances in the María Cristina Park that serve to honor the guitar genius Paco de Lucia on the tenth anniversary of his death, but an experience in which the city of Algeciras immerses itself throughout the week and delves into its flamenco roots: masterclass, flashmob, conferences, exhibitions, workshops and much more”.

It is also worth mentioning that, outside the festival, on Sunday, July 14, a concert will take place in the María Cristina Park, at half past ten at night, Paco Candela’s concert ‘Plastic Heart’.
