The Department of Culture, Linguistic Policy and Sport is organizing a festival in Cornellana to celebrate the millennium of the founding of the monastery of San Salvador. Starting this Monday, On July 8th, and for seven days, there will be music, theatre and dance activities in the area surrounding the Salense monument.

The performances are free of charge and are aimed at all audiences, including children, adults and families, in order to promote a quality and accessible cultural offering, the Principality explained in a press release.

The festival will be kicked off by the Banda de Gaites de la Villa de Salas and Paulino Santirso, who will offer a concert and a dance workshop next Monday at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday it will be the turn of the performing arts, with the play Stinky but tastyby David Acera, which will take place on the monastery esplanade.

On the evening of Wednesday, July 9, Elia Esipovich on the keyboards and the singer Susana Gudín will offer a lyrical recital in the church, at 8:00 p.m. The following day, Thursday, the play will be performed The smallest show in the worldby Adrian Conde, starting at eleven in the morning in the square of the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor.

On Friday, visitors to the Monastery of San Salvador will be able to enjoy an innovative immersive show that will take place in two shifts: the first at 7 p.m. and the second at 10 p.m.

On Saturday 13th the day will be dedicated to Asturian song, with a concert in the monastery church, starting at midday, in which Reyes Menéndez, Manolo Becerrales, Marina Carbajosa, Aquilino Fernández and Xaime Menéndez will participate on the bagpipes.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a fencing exhibition and two concerts, one by the Calea group, made up of Silvia Quesada, Leticia Baselgas and Rubén Bada, and another by the Villa de Salas and Belmonte de Miranda Choir.

Rehabilitation of the monastery

Over the last decade, a major restoration process has been carried out at the Salas monastery. In 2015, the Principality rebuilt key parts of the monument with an investment of 1,016,294 euros. In 2023, the Ministry of Transport allocated 1,777,189 euros for the second phase of the rehabilitation.

For their part, the Government of Asturias and the City Council of Salas signed a collaboration agreement to jointly finance, at 50%, the cost of the technical management of this second phase of the rehabilitation.

The current regional budget includes the preparation of a plan for the uses of the monastery, which was declared a site of cultural interest in 1994 and included on the World Heritage List of the Primitive Way of St. James in 2015.
