The strike at the ArcelorMittal steel company threatens the production and prices of soft drinks in Mexico, warned the president of the National Alliance of Small Merchants (ANPEC), Cuauhtémoc Rivera.

He explained that the strike that began on May 25 at the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, due to union issues, is affecting the production of carbon dioxide in the area, an essential material for the manufacture of carbonated beverages, which are facing a 30% shortage and an increase of up to 2 pesos in their prices, as is the case of Coca Cola.

“The lack of carbon dioxide not only affects beverage manufacturers, but also small traders who depend on these products for their livelihood,” he warned.

He also called for an urgent resolution of the crisis to avoid further repercussions on the local economy.
