He refuses to recognize and submit to the Pope and the magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council

“Guilty of the crime of schism.” This is the sentence that the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith communicated this Friday morning to the former nuncio in Washington, Carlo Maria Viganò, 83 years old. The plenary of this Vatican department ordered it this week as a result of an “extrajudicial process,” reported the Spanish newspaper ABC.

“His public statements are well known, from which emerge his refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, to enter into communion with the members of the Church who are subject to him, and to recognize the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council,” the Vatican explains.

For this reason, “at the end of the criminal proceedings, Monsignor Carlo Maria Viganò was declared guilty of the reserved crime of schism,” the statement added.

Viganò responded with a text on social media that “what is imputed to me as the fault of my sentence is now confirmed, confirming the Catholic Faith that I fully profess.” He also addressed the other bishops with a phrase from the Gospel: “if these remain silent, the stones will cry out.”

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith warns that in addition to excommunication, “if his prolonged absence or the gravity of the scandal requires it, he may be punished.”

When Viganò himself announced on June 20 that the Vatican had opened proceedings against him, he said that “it is an honor” to be accused of denying the legitimacy of Pope Francis, breaking communion with him and rejecting the Second Vatican Council.

“I am honored not to have – and in fact I do not want – any ecclesial communion with them,” he wrote.
