Two people have died in a widespread fire in a multi-storey building on Cullera Street in the Latina district of Madrid, according to information provided by Emergencias Madrid.

Firefighters have rescued seven people from inside the building, two of whom were in respiratory arrest.

Samur paramedics perform resuscitation maneuvers on the victims, but finally confirm the two deaths.

Later, Samur personnel treated another nine people, six of whom were transferred to various hospitals for burns and smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out early this morning for reasons that are still unknown. Extinguishing the fire was complicated by the amount of smoke and fire in the house, and fourteen Madrid Fire Brigade units were involved in the operation.

Madrid Police and National Police are collaborating in the investigation of the accident.
