Miralles: “The Sánchez Government has left more than 30,000 needy people in the Region without food, who were previously receiving this aid”

The PP deputy has warned that the new system of basic material assistance of the ministry “will only reach 11% of the beneficiary families in the Region, 2,500, of the more than 22,000 that meet the requirements of the program”

“The new model does not provide an equitable response at the territorial level, since only 10 of the 45 municipalities in the Region have businesses attached to the program,” the regional deputy criticized.

July 8, 2024.- Miguel Ángel Miralles, regional deputy for the Partido Popular, has denounced that “the Sánchez government is leaving more than 30,000 needy people in the region without food, who previously received this aid.”

Miralles has spoken at the Special Commission for the Study of the Fight against Poverty and Social Exclusion, in which the president of the Segura de Murcia Food Bank, José García-Galbis Marín, has appeared.

The PP deputy has warned that the new system of basic material assistance of the ministry “will only reach 11% of the beneficiary families in the Region, 2,500, of the more than 22,000 that meet the requirements of the program.” “In addition, it leaves out all the people who live alone and families without children who do not have the basic resources,” he added.

Miralles explained that “the ministry did not inform about this new programme nor did it take into account the autonomous communities in its design. It was only a month earlier, in December 2023, when it announced who would be the beneficiaries of the new system and indicated that the Ministry of Social Rights would be in charge of contracting and delivering the cards”, he recalled.

“But January 1st arrives and the Ministry does not take responsibility,” Miralles criticised, pointing out that “it is the Red Cross that has to take charge of the entire process, including the businesses that participate in the system, while the Ministry has failed to meet the agreed deadlines.”

Another example of the lack of transparency and coordination of the PSOE Government

“The lack of transparency and coordination by Sánchez’s government has been such that by the end of May no autonomous community had implemented it, including those governed by the PSOE,” he added.

Miralles also stressed that “this model of the ministry does not provide an equitable response at the territorial level, since only 10 of the 45 municipalities in the Region have businesses affiliated with the program.”

“The Government has boasted that, with the new system, they were going to put an end to hunger queues and that the card-wallet would bring dignity,” he recalled. “Tell that to all the people who used to receive food and now will not be able to get it: they will go to those queues, which will be longer, because there will be much less food,” he asserted. “And dignity is for everyone equally, or it is not dignity,” he added.

Furthermore, Miralles pointed out that “while the situation of poverty in Spain has worsened dramatically since Pedro Sánchez came to power, placing us as the third country in the EU with the highest risk of poverty, in the Region we have a Government that does care about people, especially the most vulnerable.” “We are the second autonomous community where GDP has grown the most and which has reduced unemployment the most in the last year and, in addition, more than 110,000 people have escaped poverty in the Region since 2015,” he pointed out.

“The López Miras government will continue working to help more families escape poverty, to ensure that no one lacks basic food supplies and that no family is left behind,” Miralles concluded.
