The semifinals of the 2024 Copa América begin this Tuesday and Conmebol has already appointed the referees who will direct the matches for passage to the final.

The world champion team will face the surprise of this competition, Canada, where a Chilean will be in charge of dispensing justice: Piero Maza.

The CONMEBOL Referee Commission has appointed a Chilean refereeing team for the important match between the Argentine national team and the Canadians. Chileans Piero Maza (main referee), Claudio Urrutia (assistant No. 1) and Jose Retamal (assistant No. 2), Cristian Garay (fourth referee) and Juan Serrano (fifth referee) will be present at the Argentina vs. Canada match.

The VAR will be in charge of Chileans: Juan Lara will be the main referee, accompanied by Edson Cisternas (AVAR) and Rodrigo Carvajal (AVAR 3). Also the Peruvian Augusto Menéndez (AVAR 2) will be the assistant.

A tough challenge for Chilean referees amid the controversy over refereeing decisions that have taken an unfortunate turn at the 2024 Copa América.

Piero Maza and his history with the Argentines

Chilean referee Piero Maza has a favourable record for the Argentines when he has officiated them. In the two matches in which the Chilean referee has been the main referee, Argentina has won.

The first one was in the 2022 Grand Finalwhere the Argentine national team faced Italy at Wembley. The duel between the Champion of America and the Champion of Europe ended with a 3-0 victory for the Argentine team.

On the second occasion that Maza refereed a match for Argentina, it was in the controversial match against Brazil at the Maracaná Stadium in the qualifiers. In that match, the world champion team won by the minimum score thanks to a goal by Nicolás Otamendi.

A positive result for Argentina, which is looking to reach another Copa América final. Of the last 10 finalsthe Argentines have been present in 5 and in only one were they able to lift the cup (2021).

This Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. the Argentina vs. Canada match will be played for the semifinals of the 2024 Copa América.
