Formula 1: Ferrari technical director resigns – Sports

London — Ferrari Formula One chassis technical director Enrico Cardile has resigned from his post with immediate effect, the Italian team said Monday.

Team principal Fred Vasseur will oversee the chassis department as a stopgap measure. Cardile spent almost two decades at Ferrari, which is second in the championship after winning two of 12 races so far but is at risk of being overtaken by McLaren, which is just seven points behind.

Italian media have linked Cardile with Aston Martin, whose two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was previously at Ferrari. Loic Serra will join Ferrari from Mercedes in October as head of chassis performance engineering and was to report to Cardile.

The sport’s most successful team is also trying to sign star designer Adrian Newey, who announced his departure from Red Bull without specifying his destination.
Aston Martin has also made an offer to Newey, according to F1 and British media. Ferrari will have seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, winner of Sunday’s British Grand Prix, joining from Mercedes next season.
