Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren announced on Monday that he has submitted a note of protest to the Colombian Chargé d’Affaires against statements made by Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding the preventive detention ordered against the leader of the Chilean Communist Party (PCCh) and mayor of the Recoleta commune in Santiago de Chile, Daniel Jadue.

“These are unacceptable and reckless statements that ignore the democratic history of our country and the existence of the rule of law,” the Chilean diplomat said on his social media profile X.

Hours earlier, Petro used the aforementioned social network to ask for the release of Jadue, “imprisoned by the jurisprudence of (Augusto) Pinochet imposed on free beings.” To make these statements, he shared a video of one of the members of the International Committee for Justice for Daniel Jadue, Gabriela Rivadeneira, who said that “the dictatorship of the judicial war is a real war because it annihilates you.”

Rivadeneira said that the attack “is not on the person, but on the political project he represents.” “He promoted a communist project from the communist mayor’s office,” he recalled, referring to the Popular Pharmacies. “This was so successful that even right-wing mayors replicated it. But they are not in jail. Daniel Jadue is in jail, because he is also one of the names that is being mentioned as a presidential candidate,” he added.

The Third Guarantee Court of Santiago de Chile ordered preventive detention at the beginning of the month against Jadue, accused of disloyal administration, bribery, tax fraud, fraud and bankruptcy in the so-called Farmacias Populares case, which could lead to a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Jadue was the rival of the current president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, in the primary elections of the Apruebo Dignidad coalition held in 2021. Boric beat Jadue with 60 percent of the votes compared to 39 percent collected by the communist leader.
