Beginning early this morning, the first phase of the Rickenbacker Bridge rehabilitation project has begun, bringing with it significant traffic flow changes that will impact residents and drivers who regularly travel through the Key Biscayne area. This reconstruction effort will continue through August 3, involving detours and potential delays for motorists.

As of 1 a.m., the southbound bridge to US1 has been closed. Drivers heading west from Key Biscayne will be rerouted to Southwest 26 Road and then Brickell Avenue. This initial phase, which will conclude on July 20, is designed to minimize disruption, although unavoidable inconveniences are expected during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Elder Fernandez, who works in the area, commented on the challenges he faces due to the repairs: “Traffic gets very heavy, especially during rush hour. Getting around by bicycle is a better option to avoid being late for work.”

Alberto Pepen, also employed in the area, mentioned that so far the works have not significantly affected his work routine: “The days we couldn’t open were when the machinery was in the area, but in general we have worked without problems.”

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava highlighted that a strategic plan has been implemented to minimize the impact on visitors and residents of the area. “We have a plan that will have minimal impact for those who are visiting. Additionally, there are no events scheduled during construction to reduce traffic.”

The second phase of the project will begin July 21 and run through August 3, when the northbound bridge to I-95 will close. Drivers in this phase will be detoured back onto Southwest 26 Road, continuing west to the I-95 northbound entrance ramp.

The Florida Department of Transportation says it is working closely with local authorities to prevent incidents like the one that occurred on April 14, when similar repairs trapped dozens of drivers for hours. Motorists are urged to exercise patience and caution, especially during rush hour, to avoid accidents and minimize stress associated with detours.

Drivers should be alert for possible changes and warnings on traffic signs to avoid further inconvenience. “It is essential to stay informed and follow the directions to ensure as smooth a transition as possible during this reconstruction period.”
