Russia accuses Ukraine of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention

Moscow, Jul 8.- kyiv regularly violates the Chemical Weapons Convention, said the head of the Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces, Igor Kirilov, who reported that more than 400 cases of use of toxic chemicals by Ukrainian soldiers have been recorded in the special military operation.

“The kyiv regime regularly violates the Chemical Weapons Convention,” Kirilov said at a press conference at the Russian Defense Ministry on Ukraine.

During a search near the town of Avdeyevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a chemical laboratory used for the production of toxic substances was discovered.

A rotary evaporator, chemical reactors, laboratory utensils and reagents, among other things, as well as gas masks, including those made in the US, and a Polish protective suit were found at the facility.

According to tests by a diagnostic group, the laboratory vessels contained traces of sulfuric acid, sodium cyanide and cyanide anions.

“The presence of these chemicals clearly indicates that the laboratory produced commonly used toxic substances,” said Kirilov.

The laboratory was capable of producing three kilos of toxic agents per day, he added.

The Chemical Weapons Convention, to which Kirilov refers, was signed in 1993 by 193 of the 195 states recognized by the United Nations and entered into force in 1997. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is responsible for the international implementation of the Convention.

It is an international treaty that prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, transfer and use of chemical weapons, and also provides for the destruction of these weapons within a specific period of time. (Text and photo: Sputnik)
