Nowadays, there is a wide variety of streaming services that offer movies and series for all tastes. The best known being Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney, Apple TV, many of them are committed to creating their own content that motivates people to subscribe to their service through a monthly subscription.

With so many options, it is very difficult and uneconomical to be able to pay the monthly subscription for all of them, which is why the Argentine engineer Francisco Parata conducted a detailed analysis of all existing platforms in terms of quality-price, taking into account the number of films and series each service had, the quality of the content, price and those with the fewest repeated titles.

What is the best streaming service in the world?

To determine the best streaming service in the world, the first thing he did was determine how many movies and series each platform had. Information that is not publicly available, so he ‘scraped’ (a way of obtaining information from web pages through lines of code) all the catalogs, then put together a script and obtained a calculation.

  • Apple – 226 titles
  • HBO Max – 2,300 titles
  • Disney+ – 2,461 titles
  • Prime Video – 5,354 titles
  • Netflix 5,720 titles.

In this sense, he indicates that the price has no relation to the number of films and series that the service has in its catalogue. For example, Apple TV costs 3 times more than Prime Video, but it has 4% of the titles. To try to justify this difference, he sought to analyze the quality of the films and series, and for that he used the score of the famous film platform IMDb, which goes from 1 to 10, and got an average per streaming. “There I also put together a very small script to get this data,” he explains.

  • Prime Video – 6.04 IMDb score
  • Netflix – 6.51 IMDb score
  • HBO Max – 6.61 IMDb Score
  • Disney+ – 6.63 IMDb Score
  • Apple – 7.12 IMDb Score

Now, what follows is to combine the variables of the number of films and series, the quality of those films and series and the price of each platform, and thus we could determine which is the best in terms of quality-price. These were the results from worst to best:

  • Disney+ – 0.38
  • Apple TV- 0.40
  • HBO Max – 0.49
  • Prime Video – 0.57
  • Netflix – 0.60

Does that mean Netflix is the best streaming service?

According to Francisco Parata, his analysis does not mean that Netflix should be everyone’s favourite platform. “For example, for me it’s HBO because I like the movies and series it has the most, but if you had to pay for just one, Netflix is probably the best option,” he explains.
