  • The local team is the only one selected to represent Argentina.
  • The contest will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Province of Córdoba is recognized throughout the country for its fire department, both those that are part of the Córdoba Police, those that make up the Technical Team for Action in the Event of Catastrophes (ETAC) and those that work voluntarily.

These three legs of the fire department set high standards for rescue work, firefighting, tracking missing persons, and transporting hazardous materials.

Within this scenario, personnel from the Fire Department (DUAR) are training to represent the Police of the province of Córdoba – both nationally and internationally – in the Technical/Scientific Event of Rescue at Height in Brazil. This unit is the only one selected to represent Argentina in the sister country.

The 2024 edition of this event will be held on July 16, 17 and 18.

Sergio Cravero, Director of Firefighters of the Córdoba Police, explained that during these three days “A congress will be held, along with training sessions and then an Olympics that will take place in different locations in the city of São Paulo on rescue and lifesaving techniques at height.”

For this reason, nine firefighters from Cordoba will be in charge of representing our province and the country over 2,500 kilometers away, in Sao Paulo. On the way to Brazil, the team will carry for the competition: high-altitude, heavy and large equipment such as stretchers, ropes and hard material.

Training and qualification

The team that will participate in the competition has been training for the past two months, doing exercises at the Bicentennial Lighthouse in preparation for their final performance.

The firefighters’ training was carried out in this space because it was “one of the highest places in Córdoba”, commented Jonatan Barrionuevo, General Coordinator of the team, chosen for being 100 meters tall.

Elevation is a determining factor in order to arrive as accurately as possible to the competition. “In Brazil, most buildings are over 100 meters high,” he explained about the competition venues.

In addition, Barrionuevo explained the reason why these types of rescue exercises are carried out – on an inclined plane – because “It is used very often in the city of Córdoba, especially in buildings.”

In turn, he stressed that it is extremely important to participate in this type of international competitions for “update new techniques for us, to be able to provide a good service to society”.

“There, new work methodologies are well known so that the firefighter’s work is more efficient”he concluded

Along the same lines, Cravero highlighted that the entire Police fire department has been trained in different branches in Brazil, Chile and Peru.We continually provide training and education to our 430 officers so that we can bring the greatest professionalism to all operations for the citizens of Córdoba.“, he concluded.
