They recommend ratifying the initial sanction of the Senate on a proposed law

In an extraordinary session, the Commission for the Prevention, Fight against Drug Trafficking and Related Crimes, chaired by Senator Sergio Rojas, met to discuss the bill that modifies articles of Law No. 5876/2017 “On the administration of seized and confiscated assets.”

Specifically, this is Message No. 709 of the Chamber of Deputies, by which Resolution No. 951 is sent “Which rejects the bill ‘That modifies articles 10, 39 and 46 of Law No. 5876/2017 ‘On the administration of seized and confiscated assets’, modified by laws Nos. 6396/2019 and 6786/2021”, presented by Senators Ever Villalba, Celeste Amarilla, Eduardo Nakayama and the then Senator Kattya González.

In this regard, it is important to mention that the designers, in their explanatory statement, state that there are assets that, in addition to having an economic interest, possess another even more important virtue that is conferred upon them by their very nature and whose social value exceeds the economic. They refer to works of art that, according to the Law to be amended, could also be subject to seizure, abandonment and declared for forfeiture.

The bill was approved by the Senate in a session on September 13, 2023, and rejected by the Chamber of Deputies in a session on March 6, 2024.

The legislators’ position was to ratify the Senate version, approving the aforementioned project.

It is important to note that this issue is included as point five on the agenda, scheduled for the regular session of the Senate this Wednesday, July 10.
