A manhunt breaks out in an attempt to arrest “El Guano”, brother of “El Chapo”

A confrontation on Monday on the border of Durango and Sinaloa was the result of a military operation aimed at locating and arresting Aureliano Guzmán Loera, “El Guano,” brother of “El Chapo,” who maintains operations in the region.

However, “El Chapo” Guzmán’s brother managed to escape and the mobilization left one person dead, although one of its members was arrested.

The operation began in a community called San José del Llano, Badiraguato, around 11:00 a.m.; however, the confrontation was so intense that it lasted for more than four hours and the chase reached Durango, near El Durazno, Tamazula.

Following the chase, four people were arrested, including Luis “El R-8,” head of security for Aureliano’s family, who was flown to Mexico City.

According to unofficial information, the operation left four dead, including “El Gringo,” son of “El Guano,” although authorities have not yet confirmed his death.

This is the third operation carried out in just over a year to capture Aureliano Guzmán, since failed mobilizations were recorded in February and August 2023.

Aureliano Guzmán maintains operations in the area known as the “Golden Triangle of drug trafficking” for drug trafficking to the north of the country, disputing territory with “Mayo” Zambada and the “Chapitos.”

In the next few hours, federal authorities are expected to officially report the number and identity of those arrested during this operation, which took place on Monday in the border area between Durango and Sinaloa.

Who are ‘Los Guanos’, Aureliano Guzmán Loera’s criminal group?

According to the United States Department of Justice, Aureliano Guzmán Loera is responsible for international drug trafficking.

Aureliano Guzmán Loera is also known as ‘El Guano’. His nickname is due to the fact that he is located for being one of the alleged leaders of an arm of the Sinaloa Cartel that is identified as ‘Los Guanos’.

This group is a criminal cell that operates in Badiraguato and is part of the so-called Golden Triangle. Aureliano Guzmán’s organization controls drug smuggling routes from Sinaloa, through Sonora and to the United States.

Their main source of income is the cultivation of marijuana and poppy fields in the Sierra Madre mountain range of Sinaloa.
