Almeida also expects the approval of the European Commission: “It is good for Madrid, Spain and Europe”

MADRID, 9 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Iberia President Marco Sansavini has expressed confidence that the European Commission will give the green light to the merger with Air Europa, following the recent approval of the Lufthansa Group’s operation with the Italian airline ITA Airways.

“We are now in the final phase of the operation and awaiting the decision from Brussels, so we trust that the European Commission will give it the green light,” he said at a meeting on Tuesday at the ‘Espacio Iberia’, together with the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.

For Sansavini, this operation is “very important”, not only for the airline, but also for Spain and Madrid, as it “would significantly improve connectivity to be able to travel non-stop to many more places.”

During his speech, he stressed that the airline is trying to join forces with Air Europa, allowing it to “have a larger-scale company and, finally, be able to fulfil that ambition of having a 360-degree hub.”

For his part, Almeida has followed the same line as the president of Iberia, and is therefore waiting for the “approval” of the Commission and for it to give “a favourable opinion”.

“I think it is a good operation for Madrid and for Spain, but also for Europe as a whole, because the stronger Madrid and Spain are, the better for Europe and, in addition, it will allow us to generate great connectivity in a geographical position,” the mayor stressed.

Regarding the ‘Espacio Iberia’, which will remain on Gran Vía until 31 July, Almeida has asked citizens to visit this place, as it is “a unique opportunity” and “one of the main duties” in Madrid.
