The rabies virus remains active in Uruguay. Although no case of human rabies has been recorded since 1966 and the last case of canine rabies occurred in 1983, its circulation in hematophagous and insectivorous bats has been confirmed in recent years. A few days ago, the MSP reported that a case of this virus was recorded again, in a cat, in the department of Salto. Dr. Gabriela Franco, professor of infectious diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, told Uruguay News “For years, this virus was considered to be no longer present in the country, but in 2007 cases were recorded in cattle on the border with Brazil, and then in 2014 and 2015 also in production animals.”

Rabies is a lethal disease in mammals and “has a rather complex way of being transmitted within animals, because it affects almost all mammals. There are some that are reservoirs and one of them is bats and we already know that there has been circulation in these mammals since 2009” explained Franco.

As for the fact that the case of rabies appeared in a cat, the veterinarian said that it is not surprising, because the latest cases that appeared in the region have been in cats. “In large part because there is less vaccination than in dogs and also because of the hunting behavior of felines, taking advantage of the low and diurnal flight of bats affected by the virus.”

As preventive measures, it is necessary to ensure that our pets are vaccinated annually, avoid bite accidents and consult a doctor in case of such accidents, and report animals suspected of having rabies. Do not handle bats with bare hands. Keep in mind that this virus is only transmitted through direct contact with wounds on the skin or through the bite or scratch of an infected animal.
