The Government is committed to providing protection on roads in Pichincha, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos. Esteban Torres says that the “shutdown of engines”, announced by a union, does not mean road stoppages and closures.

At around 10:30 on July 9, the Government of Ecuador met with the Representatives of two transport unions to reverse the “engine shutdown” the national strike scheduled for July 16-17, 2024.

Transporters demand solutions in the face of the elimination of gasoline subsidies and the increase in insecurity on the country’s roads.

The session, which took place at the ECU-911 in La Puntilla, on Samborondón Avenue, was attended by Luis Felipe Vizcaíno, president of the National Federation of Heavy Transport (Phenatrape); and Napoleón Cabrera, leader of the National Federation of Light Transport (Fenacotrali).

After almost three hours of talks, the Government proposed the creation of a technical security tablewhich will meet every Monday to evaluate progress.

Vizcaíno said that “this meeting has not been just another one, but one of results. We have achieved immediate actions such as operations for informal workers on the roads and that the ECU-911 acts in response to reports of contingencies.”

Cabrera, for his part, said that the union requested to the Government the presence of police and military on the roads from Ecuador to safeguard the safety of passengers and drivers.

However, these are two of The eight federations that the union has of the carriers, so it has not yet been decided to completely decline with the national strike.

Road operations

After this meeting, the Vice Minister of Governance, Esteban Torres, said that one of the first agreements reached with the transporters is the increase of police and military operations in three ways:

  • Pichincha-Saint Domingo of the Tsáchilas.
  • Saint Dominic of the Tsáchilas-Los Ríos
  • The Rivers-El Empalme and Mocache.

According to Torres, all the members participated in this security table. Transport actors of all kinds, including the heavy transport sector.

He described as surprising the announcement of “a single organization”, the National Federation of Public Passenger Transport Cooperatives of Ecuador (Fenacotip), which called for a strike for July 16 and 17.

This announcement occurred, despite the fact that its leaders, according to the Government, knew that on July 9, in Guayaquil, the safety table, one of their biggest demands.

“An organization has decided to “shut down engines” for 48 hours, which does not mean paralysis or road closures.”

Esteban Torres, Deputy Minister of Governance.
