In the context of the public debate about equitably sharing within Israeli society the burden of serving in the military, recent data on the integration of the ultra-orthodox community in the national civil service indicate a positive trend over the past year.

The newspaper Maariv has obtained information on the number of participants joining national civil service frameworks, which shows an impressive increase of 65% in one year.

The number of ultraortodoxos who chose this path between July 2023 and June 2024 amounts to 811 participants, compared to 492 new ones ultraortodoxos of the previous year, according to The Jerusalem Post.

In total, around 1,500 individuals ultraortodoxos are currently serving in various areas of the national civil service, a figure not far from the number of ultra-Orthodox soldiers in military service.

In fact, since the outbreak of the war between Israel y Hamaseach month has seen significantly more new recruits compared to the same month last year, including a record 177 recruits just last month (June 2024).

Looking only at data since the fighting began in October, the increase is even greater: 73% more than in the corresponding period last year.

A significant increase

According to the data, last year there was a significant increase of 108%, specifically in the security services sector (from 134 to 279), which includes institutions such as the policehe Shin Bet and even the Mossad.

According to sources familiar with the details, the war increased the desire of many young people ultraortodoxos to contribute to the State. Since this option does not involve military enlistment, it is considered more acceptable and appropriate for their community.

The minister Orit Strockhead of the Civil Service Commission, said in response to the publication that “the national civil service is an excellent platform for the quality contribution of young people ultraortodoxos to the State and its security, without in any way harming their faith and way of life. We would be delighted to expand the frameworks and allow hundreds and thousands more to join and contribute through our service frameworks.”

Regarding his incorporation into the army, the Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallantannounced on Tuesday that the IDF will begin recruiting ultra-Orthodox starting in August
