The rise between the Government and public universities from all over the country the budget issue still continues. Now, after a first half of the year convulsed by the conflict, the unions announced that They are already evaluating new measures for the remainder of the school year. In this context, they announced that They consider not starting the second quarter unless a salary agreement is reached with the teachers and they plan to call for a new Federal University March in September.

The strike was proposed in the last few hours within the framework of the Plenary of Secretaries General of the National Federation of University Teachers (CONADU), where representatives from 21 unions met to discuss the current situation facing the institutions.

At the meeting, they again claimed that the government still did not respond to the unions’ demands and the National University Negotiation has not been convened. According to them, “the situation is getting worse day by day.”

“The budget crisis, which could not be resolved while the wage issue is not resolvedl, and which has been attempted to be hidden in order to demobilize the university protest, continues to fuel a problem that will deepen in the coming weeks if the government does not effectively and substantially increase the available credit, which from December to date has only increased by 1.6%”they reported in a statement.

Along the same lines, they pointed against the political sector for refusing to debate in Congress the budgetary emergency of universities and the reestablishment of FONID, while they stressed that the latest measures taken by the Government of Javier Milei make them think that the intention to defund public universities is “increasingly clearer”.

“Following the passing of the Ley Bases, with the advancement of the program to dismantle the State, deregulate the economy and criminalize protest, it is becoming increasingly clear that the defunding of public universities and the impoverishment of their teaching and non-teaching workers is part of the policy of plundering and social discipline being carried out by the Milei government, with the complicity of the sectors that have supported the approval of this law while refusing to debate in Congress the budgetary emergency of universities and the reestablishment of FONID,” the document continues.

For this reason, they announced the measures they are considering taking in view of the beginning of the second quarter in order to emphasize their demand for the updating of teachers’ salaries. This is a 72 hour strike which would take place after the winter break – which would delay the return of students to the classrooms – and another similar protest during the fourth week of August.

Both proposals, according to reports, will be analyzed by all unions in the next few hours and, once there is a general consensus, they will become effective. To these would be added the call for a new Federal University March, planned for early September.

The last Federal University March

“In the unanimous understanding of the need to expand and strengthen the state of mobilization in universities, outlining a plan of struggle that can be agreed upon within the framework of the University Trade Union Front, the Plenary resolved that the grassroots unions of the Federation hold assemblies and consultations with their bases to consider the proposal to establish the non-start of the second four-month period by carrying out a 72-hour strike in the second week of August, another similar measure in the fourth week, and articulating other actions of debate and visibility on the path to building a new great Federal University March that should take place in the first half of September,” they indicated in the text.
