The filmmaker has been inspired by HG Wells, but also by ancient Rome for a project that began to take shape more than 40 years ago.

Film and TV Editor

I am the boy who will tell you all the latest news in film and television in 3DJuegos. I am passionate about science fiction, fantasy, superheroes and movie curiosities, those little behind-the-scenes stories of the directors and actors we have been following since we were little. My favorite saga? Star Trek. My favorite character? Superman, although lately a little more John Wick. One last thing, I promise not to bore you too much in my topics. LinkedIn

We have already told you on more than one occasion about Megalopolis, a very personal science fiction project signed and financed out of his pocket by Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. But it wasn’t until this week that we finally received an image of the film.

Very soon, premiere in Cannes

Although its world premiere is not yet certain, some of the press, hopefully including our colleagues at Sensacine, will be able to enjoy the film this May 17 at the Cannes Film Festival. It is perhaps for this reason that the director wanted to let us see an image of the film, with Adam Driver in the foreground with the city that he wants to rebuild in the background.

There is not much more to tell about the image, but we do have new statements from the director in an interview with Vainity Fair that allow us to get a more concrete idea of what type of production he wanted to make:

“The seed of Megalopis was sown with The afterlife (Things to Come), a film written by HG Wells that I saw as a child. This Korda classic from the 1930s is about building the world of tomorrow and has always been with me, first as a young scientist and then as a filmmaker.”

But the work of H.G. Wells It is not the director’s only source of inspiration. He also admits to having shaped the idea of him based on a criminal conspiracy of ancient rome, the devastation caused by 9/11, etc. Of course, and contrary to what we have been saying until now, this is not a film that has been in the making for 40 years, but rather one that began to emerge in Coppolla’s mind then.

It really began to be written as such a little over a decade ago, when the filmmaker began to shape this story where we will follow a young architect (Adam Driver) who dreams of a utopian future and wants to rebuild his city. However, he faces a very pragmatic mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). For now We do not know if the film can be seen in cinemas in Spain.
