I think few can doubt that Jason Statham is already on the Olympus of action movie stars, especially if we limit the genre to the 21st century. The British actor has managed to find a place here where he can shine like few others, perhaps not getting the best scripts in the world but stories with more than valid excuses to see him display a set of skills that include, for example, being able to stop with his feet the fury of a Megalodon. But where we like to see him most is destroying bad guys and not innocent sharks, and that is served to us on a plate by The Beekeeper, now on Prime Video.
With 105 minutes of footage, the film distributed in Spain under the full name of Beekeeper: El Protector presents a basic story not unlike John Wick. Here we have another guy, a certain Adam Clay, who after a life dedicated to carrying out complicated missions is retired and lives day to day with the only occupation of take care of your bees. Beekeeper in English is beekeeper, but I can tell you that in this production it means something else. The fact is that the only neighbor with whom good old Clay had dealings falls victim to a cyber scam, causing enormous anger in the protagonist… followed by a very, very fun trail of deaths and explosions.
One of the biggest hits of 2024 at the box office
Here we do not have a criminal underworld as apparently elaborate as that of John Wick, but we do have one of special agents and mercenaries that allow us to see in this first film the germ of a future franchise, especially taking into account how The Beekeeper has raised $152.7 million with an investment of 40 million dollars, being as of May 2 one of the biggest hits of the year in cinemas, although, it must be said, 2024 is not being spectacular.
Although this first film leads us to focus on a small and not very satisfactory conspiracy of a large united corporation linked to the United States, throughout its story the ingredients of a mysterious organization which for some reason (it seems due to original setting issues) uses computers that look like they were taken from the 80s and early 90s.
As we said, all this serves as an excuse, a very good one, to see Jason Statham do what he does best, clean everything in his path of thugs and mercenaries and the occasional law enforcement officer who crossed his path. Everything is very fun and lets us see about thirty deathssome quite original, including some very satisfying dogfights.
Where to watch The Beekeeper on TV
I wouldn’t dare say that The Beekeeper is one of the best that the actor has given us in recent years, but all fans of the genre will like it. It also marks the return to a film praised by critics by David Ayer, who after his time in Suicide Squad, and seeing how the film was mutilated in the editing room, suffered a small hiatus in his career that Jason Statham has relaunched and It will continue relaunching with several more projects on the way. So he remembers, You have The Beekeeper available on Prime Video.
