‘The Hunt for Gollum’ already exists. And Warner has reacted somewhat exaggeratedly

Many fans grimaced when Warner announced that the next ‘Lord of the Rings’ film would focus on Gollum’s early adventures (without making it clear whether it would be an origin story or simply a story that took place some time before what was seen). in Tolkien’s books), but what was clear is that it sounded like a “minor” film compared to the classic trilogy. Good intuition: the experiment already exists, it is also called ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ and was available on YouTube for free until Warner asked for it to be removed.

It is a considerably ambitious 39-minute production directed by Chris Bouchard, which raised some dust at the time, when it was released in 2009. The fan-film is set in the first act of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and completes one aspect by the one the movies tiptoed past: Gandalf meeting Aragorn and asking him to find Gollum to find out more about Frodo’s ring. Aragorn, after a series of adventures, traps Gollum and is attacked by orcs and Ringwraiths. Gollum ends up in the hands of the elves of Mirkwood and is interrogated by Gandalf.

After Warner’s announcement, the film disappeared from the Internet for several hours, with a YouTube notice saying that it had been reported by Warner and removed for infringing on rights owned by the company. The negative reaction from fans, however, possibly motivated Warner to reconsider their stance and, considering that a production like that couldn’t do any harm to his projectwithdrew the claim.

Perhaps this short is giving us a clue as to where the shots of this new film are going to go: Gollum worked perfectly as a secondary character in the films but (just look at the recent and unfortunate video game) he would not work out so well. as protagonist. We may possibly see something similar to this fan-film in the film, with larger characters (perhaps Aragorn or Gandalf, like here) taking the lead role. Anyway, we won’t know until 2026.
