Just when we thought that the story of Middle-earth had come to an end on the big screen, Peter Jackson surprises us with a new adventure. In collaboration with Warner Bros., Jackson is set to produce “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Accompanying him on this journey are director Andy Serkis, and writers and producers Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, all veterans of the original trilogy.

A story that deserved to be told

During an interview with Deadline, Peter Jackson shared his vision for this new installment. “The character of Gollum/Sméagol has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while his Sméagol side is, in some ways, quite nice,” Jackson explained. “I think it connects with readers and audiences because we all have a little bit of both inside us. “We want to explore his past and delve into parts of his journey that we didn’t have time to cover in the previous films.”

Jackson also mentioned the importance of staying true to Tolkien’s vision. “It is too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice it to say that we will follow Professor Tolkien’s guidance.”

The one chosen to lead

The choice of Andy Serkis as director was not a surprise. Jackson commented: “Working with Andy directing the second unit on ‘The Hobbit’ was a pleasure. “He has the energy, imagination and, most importantly, an inherent understanding of the story world necessary to return to Middle-earth.” Confidence in Serkis is absolute, given that they have collaborated on eight films together. “There is no one in this world better equipped to tackle Gollum’s story than Andy.”

Philippa Boyens, co-writer of the script with Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, also expressed her enthusiasm. “Gollum’s story is one of the most compelling for us, in terms of a character we weren’t able to delve into as much as we wanted to before, which sounds strange given how familiar he is to everyone,” Boyens commented.

Exploring the depths of Gollum

Boyens went on to explain why they decided to return to Middle Earth. “Gollum’s life takes place in a very interesting period of Middle-earth. When we were first asked the question, this was the first story we thought of. “I can tell you, and people may not believe it, but we had no expectations of going back to this.” The opportunity to work again with Warner Bros. and the executives from the original films was also a big draw.

Serkis’ excitement about directing “The Hunt for Gollum” is palpable. “I am very honored to have been asked to come back. I really am. I love them as filmmakers because they are honest. “They always look for the truth,” Serkis shared. Serkis’ connection with the character of Gollum is deep. “Gollum has always been with me all these years. “I’ve read audiobooks of the trilogy, the Silmarillion and The Hobbit, so Tolkien’s world has never left me since we made the first films.”

For Serkis, returning to this world and exploring Gollum’s psychology is an exciting opportunity. “It’s absolutely exciting to be able to go back and delve into his world again, and specifically Gollum’s psychology.” Serkis is determined to create a film that has its place in the canon, but also offers something fresh and new.

A shared vision

Fran Walsh also praised Serkis, saying: “Pete has always admired Andy’s skills as a director. That’s why he asked her to direct his second unit. It wasn’t a question of why Andy, but a question of, please, God, let Andy say yes.”

The enthusiasm and dedication of the creative team promise a deep and emotional exploration of the character of Gollum. “There are many people who may wonder why we are doing this, why we return to this world. Well, our job is to show why we think it’s a good idea,” Boyens stated.

The film, which promises a unique and in-depth look at one of Tolkien’s most complex characters, is scheduled for release in 2026. With such a passionate and talented team behind the project, Middle-earth fans can look forward to another epic adventure. which, without a doubt, will enrich the legacy of Tolkien’s work.
