‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is rated R, but Ryan Reynolds didn’t expect Disney to allow it

In 2019 Disney bought Fox, representing a before and after for Hollywood on many levels. Aside from the obvious, that the number of majors historical ones (we will see if this is not limited even more now, with the intention of sony to get paramount), there was the fact that Disney had at its disposal all the intellectual properties of the company it was absorbing and, specifically, the possibility that certain characters could join its lucrative Marvel universe. It is the case of the X Menof the Fantastic four or, naturally, Deadpool.

While the X-Men already have a highly praised animated series on Disney+ (X-Men ’97) and Fantastic four It is right now the most anticipated upcoming movie of the year. MCUit turns out that the Merc with a Mouth will be officially jumping into the franchise very soon, the July 26. It’s when it premieres Deadpool and Wolverinewhere the character of Ryan Reynolds will join the mythical mutant of Hugh Jackman years after we thought we had seen his farewell in logan. It was something that was going to happen at any moment, but the question had always been whether a company like Disney, so focused on family audiences, was going to allow Deadpool would continue to be rated Rfor adults.

After all, the Merc with a Mouth is not only known for his breaking of the fourth wall: he is also known for the considerable volume of blood and swearing that peppers his adventures. But lo and behold, there has been no problem. Deadpool and Wolverinedirected by Shawn Levy, will have its R just like the previous films had, something that surprised Reynolds himself. He has confessed this in Fandango: “I hope this doesn’t sound condescending, but I’m very proud of them for doing this. It’s a big step for them, he adds. all one color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people they have been entertaining forever.”

Reynolds assures that it is not about exploiting an alleged “ability” of R-rated movies: it’s just that “there’s no other way to do it with this character.” Levy, who was also present at the interview, added: “We were clear from the beginning… If the three of us are going to do this, we have to be true to the tone from a movie Deadpool. And that means we’re not going to sugarcoat anything, we’re going to be bold and fun.” The director assures that they had a lot of support both from Disney and from Marvel Studios: “They have trusted us and have allowed us to make the best version of Deadpool and Wolverine”.
