After a 24-year wait, the sequel to Gladiator is coming soon. The film, directed once again by Ridley Scott, comes with a new cast that promises to provide strong emotions. Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington lead this new adventure, which takes us decades after the original epic starring Russell Crowe.

The production has just given a preview of the plot and revealed the first images of the film, which is scheduled to premiere in Argentina on November 21, through a report in Vanity Fair magazine in which Scott and his actors told something about what is to come.

The plot follows Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), the nephew of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and the secret son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus. Twenty years after being rescued by the gladiator, Lucius lives a quiet life in a coastal town in Numidia with his family. Everything changes when Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) decides to invade his home in North Africa.

A path full of challenges

Making a sequel to “Gladiator,” the Oscar-winning film of 2000 and the highest-grossing film of that year, was no easy feat. Plans began almost immediately after the success of the first film, but they ran into a considerable obstacle: the shocking death of Maximus at the end of the original story. How could they move forward without their iconic protagonist?

In an unexpected twist, Australian musician and screenwriter Nick Cave proposed a wild idea: to bring back Maximus as an immortal warrior, spanning centuries and epic battles. Although the proposal was quickly dismissed, it showed the extent of the fascination that “Gladiator” had generated.

The perfect cast

Ridley Scott knew that finding the right actor to play Lucius was crucial. “Almost four years ago, I saw Paul Mescal on a TV show and thought, ‘Who is this guy?’” Scott says. One Zoom call and one meeting later, Scott was convinced. “He was absolutely perfect,” he says.

Mescal, best known for his role in the miniseries “Normal People,” fully committed to his role, transforming his physique to embody a true warrior. “I wanted to look big and strong, someone who could do damage when necessary,” says Mescal. This dedication did not go unnoticed, especially by his co-star Pedro Pascal.

The chemistry on the set

Pedro Pascal, who plays Marcus Acacius, a Roman general trained by Maximus, is impressed by Mescal’s transformation. “I call him Paul ‘Brick Wall’ Mescal. He became so strong that I would rather be thrown off a building than have to fight him again,” jokes Pascal. Despite the physical challenges, the actor admits that working with Mescal and under Scott’s direction was an unforgettable experience.

New faces and expected returns

In addition to Mescal and Pascal, the cast of “Gladiator 2” includes Denzel Washington as Macrinus, an arms dealer who controls a group of gladiators, and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta. Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi also return in their roles as Lucilla and Senator Gracchus, respectively.
