We never get tired of watching it over and over again.

At 32 years old, I remember perfectly the first time I saw Noa’s diaryIt wasn’t in the movie theaters, but on a school trip, where we were allowed to choose the movie we wanted to enjoy during our free time. I hadn’t heard of it yet, but my classmates were sure about it. There were only two possible options: see Noa’s diary o A walk to Remembera romantic drama that was released two years earlier.

The funny thing is that both are adaptations of Nicholas Sparks novels and 20% of the class seemed to know them. That’s how I found one of my guilty pleasures: A film with one of the saddest endings in history, available on Netflix, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

20 years! You heard right. In 2024, it will be 20 years since Noa’s diary was released in movie theatersalthough in Spain we had to wait a little longer than the rest. The film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling was released in the United States in June 2004, while in our country it arrived in October of the same year. Two decades dedicated to watching the film over and over again as if we didn’t remember it, as if we were listening to Noa Calhoun for the first time (James Garner) reading her life story to Allie Hamilton (Gena Rowlands).

That was only the first of the countless times I have enjoyed the story of its protagonists. The story focuses on Allie, a girl from a wealthy family, and Noa, a humble employee of a wood factory. These two young people first meet in Seabrook on June 6, 1940, during a fun night at the fair. At first, Allie doesn’t seem to take Noa very seriously, but, as in every romantic comedy, they end up falling in love and prioritizing their love over the economic and social prejudices that surround them.

‘I regret it’: ‘The Notebook’ director apologizes to Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams 10 years later

Despite the purity of their feelings, the relationship between Noa and Allie seems destined to fail. First, Allie’s parents will strongly oppose this relationship and decide to take their daughter out of the village; later, it will be a war that keeps the couple apart. Finally, both will have to face the terrible disease of forgetting so that their story does not disappear from their memory..

That’s when We discover that the story the old man is reading is actually his own love story.Noa dedicates her old age to “reading” her unforgettable romance to Allie, hoping that she will have moments of lucidity and they can add small memories to their story. There is a detail hidden in the notebook that will break your heart.but I’d rather save it until I get a chance to watch the movie on Netflix.

Noa’s diary is inspired by a true story, collected by writer Nicholas Sparks and director Nick Cassavettes. The latter has confessed what is the key that makes this film work so well on screen: “If you want to know why Noa’s diary It’s considered something of a romantic classic, the answers are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and that’s the beginning and the end of the story.” This is yet another reason to watch the movie over and over again.
