It was a medical cannabis venture, known as “Boreal”, the largest in the region. In his Linkedin profile, Aguiar presented himself as a businessman with “more than 20 years of experience in the development and management of construction projects.”

The firm was actually a branch of the eponymous company originally from Canada. There, Aguiar had been president and director of Optima Caulking Group of Companies, known as a leading company in the construction industry.

Ultimately, Boreal closed its doors in June 2023 amid a scandal. Aguiar was charged with allegedly embezzling funds.

Since then, he was investigated by the Economic Crimes Prosecutor’s Office for fraud and embezzlement of 17 million dollars, according to the newspaper. The Observer. The Canadian shareholders filed a criminal complaint against him.

Aguiar said he was a collector. Among the weapons found inside a vault in the “La Maison” desk were rifles, pistols and shotguns and more than 1,500 9mm caliber ammunition, the Maldonado Police reported at the time.

“La Maison” is an impressive property of 1718 square meters, built on a plot of almost 6000 square meters. It is located near the Punta del Este Golf Club. Aguiar had acquired it in 2021.
