Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting the old version of Teams, known as Classic Teams, on July 1 of this year, the date from which it will stop implementing improvements and new features in this service.

In October last year, the company announced that it was preparing to begin an automatic transfer of users from the Classic version of Teams to the new iteration of the video confederation platform for Windows and macOS.

Microsoft then commented that with this new version of its service it sought to “offer a faster, simpler, smarter and more flexible application”, which would help users collaborate with others “more effectively”.

In fact, he indicated that he had created the new Teams “to improve the speed and performance” of the platform on Windows, something he had achieved by making this version open up to twice as fast as its predecessor.

Additionally, Microsoft said that actions such as joining meetings, switching chats or moving between channels consumed “up to 50 percent less memory and disk space than Classic Teams,” according to a statement shared on its blog.

The company began automatically updating the Classic Teams version to the new one on March 31, when it introduced an informative ‘banner’ in the application to notify users of this change.

From then until mid-May, it will automatically install the new version of Teams, although the option to return to the classic version “will continue to be available if necessary”, as it has now pointed out on its blog.

Now, the company has announced the end of availability of the old iteration, which will be next July 1, the date on which it will no longer be compatible. As a result, it will no longer incorporate improvements and new features.

This means that users will be able to continue using the classic version of the communication platform, although it will not be possible to upgrade to the Classic format if configuration problems appear thereafter, as XDA Developers reminds.

On the other hand, he commented that for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 Classic it will no longer be available from October 23 of this year, at which time access to this older version will be blocked.

Finally, Microsoft has reported that owners of Classic Teams accounts with Windows 10, macOS Big Sur and Windows Enterprise LTSC will no longer be able to access this version starting July 1, 2025.
