Russian President Vladimir Putin led on Thursday the event celebrating the 79th anniversary of the World War II victory over Nazi Germany, including the traditional military parade in Moscow’s Red Square, TeleSur reported.

The Victory Day parade was attended along with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, by his counterparts from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Among the special guests was the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez; the president of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith; and the president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

More than 9,000 soldiers, 70 military vehicles participated this year in the solemn event with weapons and military equipment, as well as the aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The Russian president noted in his speech that “we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always ready.

At the same time, the head of state of the Eurasian country emphasized that Russia will do everything possible to avoid a “global collision.”

He denounced that “revanchism is part of the policy of Western elites that fueled new regional conflicts.”

«We reject claims of exclusivity by any country or coalition. We know where the superiority of such ambitions leads,” Putin said.

He said that “The West would like to forget the lessons of the Second World War, but we remember that the fate of humanity was decided in the great battles of Moscow and Leningrad, Rzhev, Stalingrad, Kursk and Kharkov, Minsk, Smolensk and Kiev, in hard and bloody battles from Murmansk to the Caucasus and Crimea.

Now they are trying to distort the truth about World War II, he said.

«Today we see attempts to distort the truth about World War II. “That truth will stop those who are accustomed to building a de facto colonial policy on the basis of hypocrisy and lies,” he stated.

He commented that “they destroy memorials (…) to anti-Nazi fighters, put Nazi traitors and accomplices on a pedestal, obscure the memory of the heroism and nobility of the liberation soldiers, and the great sacrifice they made for life.” ».

As part of the event, the Victory Day parade took place on Red Square during a minute of mourning.

“We bow our heads to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War who died (…) to our comrades who fell in the fight against Nazism,” Putin declared.

«Victory Day unites all generations. We move forward with the support of our centuries-old traditions and we are sure that together we will guarantee a free and secure future for Russia, our people will always be united! “, concluded the President of Russia.
