Alex Saab –the businessman from Barranquilla who has been identified as a figurehead of the regime of Nicolas Madurowas declared innocent by the Colombian justice in a process that was being carried out against him for money laundering.

The decision was taken by a specialized court of Barranquilla and represents his acquittal in the first instance. The man was accused of using the Shatex company as a front to carry out fictitious imports and exports. for more than 25,000 million pesos.

Saab’s lawyers argued that the Prosecutor’s Office had not presented evidence of sufficient weight at the trial to find the businessman guilty.

“My main promise, Mr. Judge, was to give them a face, give them identity, take them out of that underworld of the unreal, of the apparent, to those foreign trade, export and import operations that the nation’s attorney general’s office labeled as ‘fictitious’ or ‘unreal’. That was then my main evidentiary promise,” Saab’s lawyer, Camilo Bocanegra, had said during the closing arguments of the trial.

In fact, the judge in the case stated in his decision that The Prosecutor’s Office failed to prove the alleged money laundering that Saab would have committed with his company Shatex.

“We won in Colombia. The truth prevailed over the lie. They won’t be able to beat us. (…) The fake news“, noted the businessman in his X account once he learned of the ruling.

Saab has been under arrest since 2021 in the United States for money laundering. He was released in December of last year in the midst of a prisoner exchange between the governments of Venezuela and the United States.

The United States considered that the diplomat had participated in the laundering of at least 350 million dollars to favor the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

Maduro’s file was declared “not guilty” during the hearings of the process that was being carried out against him and, even, claimed diplomatic immunity upon being recognized from the Miraflores Palace as an official in charge of foreign affairs.

In March of this year, a Florida judge ended up dismissing the accusations that weighed against Saab before the North American justice system

Saab was announced, on January 15, as president of the International Center for Productive Investment (CIIP) of the Venezuelan regime. Its mission is to create strategies aimed at promoting investments and foreign trade.
