The Court of Auditors has imposed a fine of 233,324.22 euros on Vox for irregular financing, according to El País. The auditing body had already warned Santiago Abascal’s party months ago that its collections to file lawsuits against political rivals were irregular; now it is forcing him for the first time to pay a fine for violating the law on party financing, which prohibits political parties from accepting or receiving “directly or indirectly” “anonymous, targeted or revocable” donations.

The violations occurred in 2019, when Vox promoted a fundraising campaign for the “cause” it called ‘Complaint against Quim Torra’, for which it raised 31,664.80 euros. Of this collection, the Court of Auditors has considered the collection of 10,563.45 euros to be irregular, arguing that the rest of the money was contributions from its own members, according to information from El País.

In addition, Vox received another 120,482.93 euros in 2019 “for the cause ‘Help us with Borja’s bail’”. Borja was a young man sentenced to two years in prison and compensation of 180,000 euros for the murder of a robber he confronted. The sentence considered proven that he did not act “in self-defence”. Despite this, Vox started a collection to avoid going to prison. Of the money raised from 5,770 donors, the supervisory body considers 91,662.11 euros irregular, after excluding the money contributed by members.

The Court of Auditors has imposed a first fine of 50,000 euros, the minimum fine for very serious offences, and a second fine of 183,324.22 euros, double the amount irregularly collected for the campaign for “Borja’s bail”.
