Minutes before midnight, Israeli Nicolás Gil Pereg died. He was serving a life sentence for the double homicide of his mother, Pyrhia Saroussy, and his aunt, Lily Pereg, which occurred in January 2019 in Mendoza.

According to local media, the so-called “cat man” collapsed on Sunday at El Sauce Hospital, where he was staying, and doctors tried to revive him with CPR maneuvers, but were unable to save him.

Although no visible signs of violence were found, the homicide prosecutor Andrea Lazo opened a rigorous investigation and the results of the autopsy will be key to determining the cause of death of the double murderer.

Gil Pereg had been sentenced unanimously to life imprisonment in November 2021, despite his defense’s attempts to pass off the double murder of the Israeli sisters as a situation of non-imputability in a context of “cat meowing” in the Criminal Judicial Pole.

The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Justice of Mendoza in March 2023, but Gil Pereg was admitted to El Sauce due to his psychiatric pathologies to finish serving his sentence there.

In December of last year, and with a major security operation, it was discovered that the “cat man” was taken to the Central Hospital due to an advanced case of varicose veins in both of his legs. The same operation was repeated months later when he was taken to the dentist for a severe toothache.

The double femicide of the “cat man”

In January 2019, Pyrhia Saroussy and Lily Pereg came to Mendoza to visit Pereg, who lived on a property with a very precarious house that was full of cats and some abandoned dogs.

The Israeli sisters were last seen alive on the 12th of that month at that address, located on Roca Street 6000 in Guaymallén, and 14 days later, the Scientific Police found their mutilated bodies covered with stones and earth in a section of the same land.

After the double murder was discovered, Gil Pereg was arrested and during his time in prison he displayed strange behavior and claimed to be “a cat,” which he reiterated on various occasions and in hearings in which he even began to meow in front of the magistrates.
