Strong message from the Archbishop of Buenos Aires during the Te Deum: “There is a lack of a social thermometer”

After the signing of the May Pact on Monday night in Tucumán, President Javier Milei participated this Tuesday morning in the traditional Te Deum for Independence Day at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires and from there the Archbishop of Buenos Aires issued a strong warning which cannot be read in the context of the Church’s own claims to the libertarian government for hunger and poverty, mainly after the scandal of the food due to expire in the Ministry of Human Capital. A few weeks ago, the Argentine Episcopal Conference had asked “not to throw away food, because there is a shortage in many homes.”

“Many lack the social thermometer to know what is happening to ordinary Argentines,” said Jorge García Cuerva before Milei, Vice President Victoria Villarruel, members of the national cabinet and the head of the Buenos Aires government, Jorge Macri.

“Something is not right when we have very rich leaders and a very poor working population”the archbishop warned and lamented: “In Argentina, six out of ten children are poor, hungry children who rummage through garbage, children who do not attend school or have very basic education.”

“Let’s not mortgage the future”he asked.

“If the congressmen of Tucumán in 1816 had insisted on their differences regarding the model for national organization or their different ideological conceptions without seeking consensus, they would still be arguing in the house of Tucumán – he observed -, although I don’t know if with the shouts, disqualifications, vulgar expressions and aggressions to which we have sadly become accustomed for years.”

“But no, the congressmen understood that the nation and the good of the Argentine people come first, and that is why they took on the enormous responsibility of declaring independence and wanted to rise to the occasion,” he said.
