A map of the Argentine Republic without the demarcation of the Falkland Islands was projected by mistake in the Casa Rosada, in a meeting intended to promote the application of the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) in the mining sector. It occurred at an event that was organized by the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Chief of Staff and the failed exhibition caused discomfort in political sectors and in war veterans’ centers.

“The error is serious. It occurred in the area under my supervision and we are going to investigate it. It was committed in the projection of one of the films, but not in the document that was distributed, where all the information is correct,” he explained to THE NATION the Secretary of Strategic Affairs of the Chief of Staff, José Luis Vila, host and person in charge of the meeting. The official instructed one of his undersecretaries to present a report on the errors committed.

The event took place in the Malvinas Hero Hall of the Casa Rosada and the auditorium was made up of diplomats, researchers and professionals from different disciplines participating in a course of postgraduate degree on Argentine Affairs taught by the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). “It was Wednesday, the same day that the veto of the House of Representatives was being debated. university financing law, which ratifies the commitment of the government of Javier Milei with the academic activities of national universities”, Vila pointed out, rescuing the initiative and admitting the failure.

“We did not notice the error, because the films were projected behind the exhibitors’ backs. It was a mistake by the technical area in which the map was made for visualization in images. The graphic material included in the document distributed to those present – material that the Government uses to promote the investment regime – was correct. Then another map on mining resources was presented, without observations,” was the explanation of the Secretary of Strategic Affairs. He insisted that on Monday he will begin “an administrative investigation to detect the origin of the error and punish whoever is responsible.

The map showed in different colors the groups of provinces that joined the investment regime promoted by the national government (Jujuy, Tucumán, San Juan, Mendoza, Río Negro, Chubut, Catamarca, Salta, Chaco, San Luis and Corrientes), which have a pending legislative process (Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Entre Ríos), which they are still discussing accession (Córdoba, Neuquén and Misiones) and those that they did not adhere (Buenos Aires, Formosa, Santiago del Estero, La Rioja La Pampa and Tierra del Fuego). In that scheme, the Malvinas Islands will not appear on the graph.

The omission of the islands on the Argentine map – initially revealed by the portal A24– generated reactions in political sectors. One of those who expressed his discomfort on social networks was former chancellor Santiago Cafiero (Union for the Homeland), stating: “This is not a mistake, this is a foreign policy decision. The government first trivializes the Malvinas issue, signs pacts that only grant concessions and then hands itself over to the British. “This is what being a Thatcher fan is all about.”

The national deputy Esteban Paulon (Federal Meeting-Santa Fe) presented a request for reports to the Government to explain what happened. “It is a shame that, in its desire to obtain foreign investments, which do not reach the country due to lack of trust, the Government throw the Malvinas cause out the window, whose claim to sovereignty is inalienable, as established by our own Constitution. It is another example of a government increasingly distant from national sentiment,” said the legislator.

At the seminar it was explained that mining activity acquires a specialization profile depending on each province. Thus, the metal segment stands out in most of the mining provinces: Santa Cruz, San Juan, Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy. It was explained that Lithium is found mainly in Catamarca and Jujuy, while the country offers other minerals, such as coal in Santa Cruz and application rocks in the provinces of Buenos Aires and Córdoba, among others.

In addition to Vila, the Undersecretary of Institutional Articulation of Strategic Affairs, Hugo Armellino, spoke at the seminar; the Undersecretary of Analysis and International Planning, Eduardo Diez; the national director of Territorial Planning, Adrián Ricardo Pérez Ciappa; the head of the RIGI area of the Federal Public Revenue Administration (AFIP), Pablo Greco; the National Director of Mining Investments of the Ministry of Mining, María Eugenia Bais, and the director of the Postgraduate Degree in Argentine Affairs of the Faculty of Law of the UBA, Agustín Romero.

Among others, representatives of entities that bring together ex-combatants, such as the Soldier José Honorio Ortega War Veterans Center and the Argentine Malvinizing Union.
