For the second consecutive year, Argentina registered a deep fall in the Global press freedom Index: it descended in total 47 places during the Government of Javier Milei. The information arises from a report of reporters without borders (RSF) that places the country in the 87th of a total of 180.
The previous report of the organization, which covered the first months of Javier Milei’s mandate, had already reflected a significant decline: Argentina went from 40 ° to 66th position. At that time, RSF warned that “the arrival of Javier Milei, openly hostile with the press, marks a new inflection point for the guarantee of the right to information in the country.”
This year’s report is particularly critical with the Argentine president, noting that the country experienced one of the most pronounced collapses globally, with a fall of 21 positions, surpassed only by Samoa (22) and Kyrgyzist (24). “The most significant setbacks in the American region are also explained by authoritarian turns. In Argentina, President Javier Milei stigmatized journalists, dismantled public media and used state advertising as a political weapon,” says the report.
These do not like authoritarians
The exercise of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe they are the owners of the truth.
It also highlights Argentina as “one of the countries where the closure of media is constant, due to the persistence of economic difficulties”, a situation that, according to the document, affects almost a third of the 180 countries evaluated.
Freedom of the press worldwide reaches an unprecedented critical level
In the report, RSF also expresses its concern about the situation of press freedom worldwide. “The economic indicator of the World Freedom Classification continues to fall in 2025 and reaches an unprecedented critical level. As a consequence, and for the first time in the history of ranking, the situation of press freedom becomes” difficult “worldwide.”
Of the indicators analyzed – sure, sociocultural environment, legislative framework, political context and economic situation – the one that deteriorated the most in the last year was that of economic pressures on the media and financial stability. “When the media are economically fragile, they are dragged into the career for the audience, at the cost of quality,” said RSF director Anne Bocandé.
“The media are currently trapped between the guarantee of their independence and their financial survival,” concludes the report to which he accessed profile.
