The sculptor Iñaki Olazabal Ezeiza has died this Saturday, May 3, in Donostia, with 65 years. Born in Andoain in 1959, within a humble family of the working class, he spent his last years in Zumaia, where he had his workshop and a gallery.
He began his sculptural training in 1983 in the Sorobilla workshop, led by Xabier Laka, a sculptor who promoted Oteiza’s ideology. Olazabal continued to form in Germany, at the Kunstakademie school in Düsseldorf, between 1991 and 1993.
Olazabal took zinc as its main raw material, with which it has created sculptures of various geometric and naked shapes. His works can be seen in various places of Basque geography, such as Andoain, Mendaro, La Arboleda, Bilbao, Zumaia, the General Meetings of Gipuzkoa, Senpere, Donibane Garazi and Orio, among many other sites.
